Brooke Sellhorn has further developed her training through the Gottman Institute and has expanded her repertoire as a couples therapist. She approaches couples counseling with enthusiasm and hope. Brooke is now a Level 3 Trained Gottman Therapist as well as a Certified Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work Leader. Brooke employs the 30+ years of research of the Gottmans in her approach with couples. The theory that she basis her counseling on is called "The Sound Relationship House". Brooke also utilizes the Gottman Relationship Checkup to provide a thorough assessment of each partner and to develop an accurate picture of the issues that are causing strife in the marriage.
The Gottman Relationship Checkup is comprised of five sections:
Friendship and Intimacy: relationship satisfaction, emotional connection, romance, and admiration
The Safety Scales: trust, chaos, commitment, and emotional philosophies
The Conflict Scales: stress, relationship harshness, and conflict management
The Shared Meaning System: shared rituals, values, and goals
Individual Areas of Concern: individual issues, safety, sex, depression, drug and alcohol use, violence, anxiety, and other issues that may need psychological or psychiatric help
Brooke utilizes the Gottman Method for working with couples. She is also trained in counseling with a Christian worldview—Brooke is willing and able to exclude Christian principles upon request.
Brooke can bill Anthem, PHP, Signature Care, CareSource, Aetna, and United Health directly for sessions with client permission to provide a mental health diagnosis for one or both partners. Brooke also can accept HSA or FSA account payments.
The flow of appointments:
1. Deposit due after scheduling the initial session-billed through confidential client portal, Jituzu, or QuickBooks. This will cover the cost of the initial sessions as well as the Gottman Check-up Assessment and materials. If insurance reimburses, we will apply the balance towards co-pays or future sessions.
2. 90 minute initial meeting with the couple
3. Gottman Check-up Assessment assessment emailed to each person to complete
4. 1 hour individual appointments with each partner
5. 1 hour Review of Gottman Assessment Results
6. Subsequent Appointments: 60 or 90 minutes, weekly or twice monthly meetings as a couple
7. Successful couples engage in regular, consistent counseling for 5-7 months with maintenance sessions to follow.
8. The Gottman method includes recording during sessions in order for the couple and therapist to view conflict conversations and to learn better ways to communicate and connect emotionally. Some recordings are also used for consultation between the therapist and the Gottman Institute. Couples will have the opportunity to opt out of recording.
